Room-by-room smart heating: how it works and what it needs

Each room at its own temperature, on one plan for the week: what room by room needs, how the plan and presets work, and what it honestly does not do.

Many UK homes are heated from a single thermostat, often in the hall. When the hall is warm the boiler stops, whether the living room is cosy or the back bedroom is cold. When the hall is cold, every radiator works hard, including the ones in rooms nobody is using.

Room-by-room heating fixes that mismatch. Each room keeps its own temperature, so the living room can sit at 21° while the spare room stays off until someone comes to stay.

What room by room needs

Each room you want to set on its own needs its own thermostat. A room without one cannot be set separately, so the first job is choosing the rooms that matter: usually the living room, the bedrooms and any room where someone works from home.

Which thermostat suits a room depends on your radiators or underfloor heating and on your boiler controls. A smart thermostat you already own may join as it is, if it can be controlled locally. A photo of your heating controls and one of a radiator is usually enough for us to see what joins and what is worth adding.

Every room then sits on the hub, a small computer in your house that keeps the plan for all of them, internet or not.

A plan for the week, presets for the moment

The house's plan moves the rooms through the day. A typical weekday looks like this:

06:30 to 08:30: 21° for breakfast.

08:30 to 17:00: 16° while the house is empty.

17:00 to 22:30: 21° with everyone home.

Overnight: 18° while everyone sleeps.

Weekends get their own times. Tap a gap to add a time, copy Monday to the whole week, or set a one-off for the day the in-laws arrive. Each room is still set on its own, so the spare room can sit at off while the living room stays at 21°.

For whatever the plan did not see coming there are 4 presets, one tap each: Home 21°, Away 16°, Sleep 18° and Boost 24°. Boost runs for 30, 60 or 90 minutes and ends by itself on the hub's clock, whether or not anyone has the app open.

Turn the dial on the wall or in the app and the house holds that until the next change in the plan, or for as long as you choose. Every screen says what it is holding and why: "Holding 22°, set on the thermostat 12 minutes ago, until Bedtime at 22:30".

Rooms that react to the house

Automations can change the heating when something happens:

At 06:45 on a weekday, but not on a bank holiday, the kitchen goes to 21°.

If the back door is left open for 5 minutes, the heating drops to 16°.

When the last person leaves, the heating goes down to 16°.

With a screen that listens, you can simply ask: "Set the heating to 21", "Warmer", or "What's the temperature?" In summer, one switch turns the heating off and keeps the plan ready for the autumn.

Every room's temperature is kept on the hub as well. If the bedroom felt cold in the night, open its history and see exactly what it was doing at 03:00.

What it does not do

It does not learn your routine or follow the forecast. It follows the plan you set and the presets you tap, so it never surprises you, and you can change the plan any time from any phone, tablet or computer in the house.

It does not promise a saving. Heating fewer empty rooms is the simplest way to use less gas, but how much depends on your house, so we will not put a number on it.

It does not show energy use by itself. What the house is using now, today's cost and the last 7 days need an energy monitor fitted, which we can add on the day.

What it costs

The price depends mostly on how many rooms get their own thermostat, and whether the rest of the house joins in at the same time. Message us on WhatsApp with the rooms you would like to control and what is on the wall now, and we will tell you straight what joins and what is worth adding. The price is fixed in writing before we start, and there is no monthly fee for any of it.
