A smart alarm without a monthly fee — how it actually works
Most alarm adverts sell you a subscription: a monthly fee for "monitoring", cloud storage and an app that stops working the day you stop paying. There is another way to build a good alarm, and it has been quietly used by engineers for years — the brains live in your house.
What happens when a door opens
A door or window sensor sees the change and tells a small hub in a cupboard. If the system is armed, the hub starts an entry countdown (typically 30 seconds) so you can disarm at the panel or on your phone. If nobody does, the hub turns on the siren and the lights, and sends a message — a push notification and, if you want, a Telegram or an SMS — to you and up to a handful of people you choose. If nobody acknowledges, it repeats to the next person on the list.
None of that needs the internet. The sensors, the hub and the siren talk to each other locally, so a cut cable at the pole does not switch your alarm off. Only the messages to phones outside the house need a connection — and they catch up the moment it returns.
What it does not do
It does not call a monitoring centre. Nobody sits in a control room watching your house. If your insurer requires a monitored, graded system with a police URN, this is not that — say so to your installer and go monitored.
It does not come with cellular backup by default. A 4G-failover router is a small add-on if your area suffers outages.
It does not upload video anywhere. That is a feature, but it means "cloud clips forever" is not on the menu — footage stays on a drive in the house for the number of days you choose.
Who it suits
People who want to own what they buy, who are happy to be the first to know rather than pay someone else to be, and who care that footage of their family never leaves the building. In practice that is most households in Poole and Dorset who ask me about it.
What it costs
A one-off for the kit and the install. Prices depend on cameras, house size and whether heating joins in — a 15-minute chat on WhatsApp usually produces a fixed price without a visit.
